Wise is an app in the money transfer category that focuses on sending money internationally at the real exchange rate. I use it to send money back home to my family without getting hit by huge hidden fees from my bank. The service, originally called TransferWise, launched its app years ago and it's available on both Google Play and the App Store. It has over 10 million downloads on Google Play alone. The app itself is free to download and install. You don't need to pay just to have it on your phone. To start sending money, you do have to register and verify your identity, which is standard for any financial app. There are no annoying ads popping up while you're trying to move your money around, which is a big relief. While the app is free, Wise makes money by charging a small, transparent fee on each transfer, which is clearly shown before you confirm anything. There are no sneaky in-app purchases to unlock features; what you see is what you get.

Using the Wise app is super straightforward. After I download and install it from Google Play, I log in and set up a transfer. I choose the country, enter the amount, and it instantly shows me the exact fee and the exchange rate I'll get – the same one you see on Google. I can pay directly from my bank account or with a debit card. One of my favorite tips is to set up rate alerts. If I'm not in a hurry, I can tell the app to notify me when the GBP to EUR rate hits a certain point, so I can send money at the best possible time. I also use the Wise debit card when I travel abroad to spend in local currency without any foreign transaction fees. It links right to the balances I hold in the app.
