Amazon Prime Video is a streaming app designed to help you watch movies, TV shows, and original series. It launched as part of Amazon Prime in 2006 in the US, with the mobile app coming later. You can get it on Google Play for Android and the App Store for iPhones and iPads. It has over a billion downloads on Google Play alone. The app itself is free to download and install. To actually watch anything, you need an Amazon Prime membership, which is a paid subscription. You can sign up right in the app. Once you're a member, there's no extra cost to stream most of the library—it's all included. Some newer movie rentals or premium channel add-ons cost extra, but that's clear when you select them. The app does show ads, but only for its own shows before you start playing something; there are no mid-roll commercials during your movie.
Using the app is pretty straightforward. After you download and install it, you log in with your Amazon account. The home screen shows rows of recommendations based on what you've watched before. I mostly use it to catch up on shows like "The Boys" or find a movie for the night. A simple tip is to use the "Download" feature if you know you'll be without Wi-Fi, like on a flight. The search works well if you know what you want, but I often just browse the "Included with Prime" section to avoid surprise charges. Compared to other apps like Netflix, I choose Amazon Prime Video for a couple of reasons. First, my family already has Prime for shipping, so the video feels like a free bonus. The content is different; Netflix has more originals I love, but Prime Video has a bigger mix of older movies and niche shows.
