Bird — Ride Electric is a transportation app designed to help you find and unlock electric scooters and bikes in cities across the U.S. and Europe. I downloaded it from Google Play when I first moved to a new city and needed a quick way to get around without a car. The app launched a few years back and is available on both Google Play and the App Store. It has been installed millions of times, which shows how popular it is. The app itself is free to download and install, which is great. You don't need to register an account right away, but you do have to sign up with your phone number and payment info before you can take your first ride. There are no annoying ads popping up while you're trying to find a scooter, which I really appreciate. However, you do pay for each ride you take, so the cost adds up based on how long you ride. It's not a subscription, so you only pay when you use it.

Using the Bird app is super straightforward. After you install it, you open the map to see all the available scooters and bikes near you. The icons are clear, showing you exactly where the vehicles are parked. I use it mostly for short trips to the grocery store or to meet friends downtown. A simple tip from a regular user: always check the battery level on the scooter icon before you walk to it. There's nothing worse than finding a scooter with only 10% charge left! To start a ride, you just scan the QR code on the handlebar with your phone's camera through the app. It unlocks with a beep, and you're off. When you finish, you park it in a designated area (not blocking sidewalks!) and end the ride in the app. It charges your card automatically. I also use it to reserve a scooter for a few minutes if I see one I like but need to grab my bag first.

Compared to other scooter apps like Lime or Spin, I keep coming back to Bird. A big reason is that the app interface feels a bit cleaner and less cluttered to me. When I first tried them all, Bird's map loaded faster on my phone. Also, in my city, Bird seems to have more scooters in the residential areas where I live, while others are more concentrated downtown. Some friends use Lime because they have a subscription plan, but since I only ride once or twice a week, Bird's pay-as-you-go works better for my budget. The ride experience is pretty similar across all apps—they're all electric scooters—but I just find the Bird app more reliable for actually finding and unlocking a ride without hiccups.
