Google Earth is a mapping app designed to help you explore the world from your phone. I first heard about it years ago, maybe around 2017, and it has been on my devices ever since. It is available on Google Play and the App Store, and it has over 500 million downloads, so you know it is popular. The app is completely free to download, and you do not even need to register to start using it. There are some in app purchases for extra features, but I have never felt the need to buy anything. You might see a few ads, but they do not get in the way too much.
When you open the app, you land on a 3D globe, which is really cool. You can zoom in and out with your fingers, and it feels smooth. I use it to check out places before I travel, like looking for hotels or just seeing what the streets look like. A simple tip is to use the search bar to type in an address or a landmark, and the app will fly you right there. You can also use the measure tool to see the distance between two spots, which I find handy. If you want to see real time traffic, you can switch to the map view, but the 3D view is what makes this app special.
Compared to Google Maps, this app is more about exploring than getting directions. Google Maps is great for navigation, but Google Earth feels like a virtual tour. I pick this app over others because it lets me see the whole planet in a fun way. It is simple to use, and it does not eat up too much battery. I think it is one of those apps you install once and keep for a long time.
Features
- 🌍 The 3D globe view is the biggest sell. You can spin the Earth and zoom into any street corner. Google Maps has a satellite view, but it does not give you that same smooth, interactive feel.
- 📸 The historical imagery feature is a gem. You can slide back in time to see how a place looked years ago. I do not think other mapping apps offer this easily.
- 📏 The measurement tools are more advanced here. You can plot a path or measure an area with a few taps. Google Maps has a basic distance tool, but this one gives me more control.
Pros
- ✨ It is incredibly fast when you load new areas. Even with my old phone, the app runs without lag, which is not always true for similar apps.
- 🧭 The search works well and remembers my recent places, so I can get back to a spot quickly. Google Maps does this too, but Earth feels more organized for exploring.
Cons
- ⚠️ The app can be tricky to use offline. You need to save maps beforehand, and it is not as easy as in Google Maps.
- 🔋 It drains my battery a bit faster when I am zooming around in 3D for a long time, which is a small downside compared to other mapping tools.
