Steam is an app in the gaming category that focuses on buying, playing, and managing video games from one place. I found out about it years ago when I wanted to play games on my computer without using discs. The app launched back in 2003 and now it is available on Windows, Mac, Linux, and also mobile devices through Google Play and the App Store. Millions of people have downloaded and installed Steam because it is free to download and use. You do have to create an account to buy games or join the community, but setting it up only takes a few minutes. Some games themselves cost money, but Steam often has big sales where you can get popular titles for cheap. The app also has free games and some in-app purchases like DLCs or cosmetics. There are ads sometimes for upcoming games or special offers, but they do not feel too pushy.
When I use Steam, I usually start by browsing the store or checking my library. You can search for games by genre, price, or user ratings. I like reading reviews from other players before I buy anything. Installing a game is simple — you just click download and Steam handles the rest. Even updates happen automatically, which saves time. A tip I always give to new users is to wishlist games you want. When those games go on sale, Steam sends you a notification. Another useful thing is the friends list. You can see what your friends are playing, chat with them, and even join their game directly. The built-in overlay also lets you take screenshots and use a browser without leaving the game. I also use the remote play feature sometimes to stream games to my laptop or phone.
Compared to other game stores like Epic Games Store or GOG, I still prefer Steam because it feels more complete. Epic gives away free games often, which is nice, but their app lacks community features and user reviews feel less helpful. GOG focuses on DRM-free games, which is good if you care about ownership, but their library is smaller. Steam just has everything — a big game library, community hubs, mod support, and regular sales. I also enjoy the Steam Points Shop where you can customize your profile. The app works well on desktop and mobile, and syncing saves between devices is smooth. Even if some people complain about the interface being messy, I find it easy to navigate after using it for a while. For me, Steam is still the best place to buy and play games.

Pros

- 🔧 Steam Workshop is another thing it does well. You can download mods and custom content directly inside the app without searching third-party sites. Other platforms like Epic do not have this feature at all, which makes Steam better for modding.
Cons
- 💾 The app can be slow to load at times, especially when it is updating or scanning files. Epic Games Store launches faster on my PC, so this is one area where Steam falls behind.
- 🖥️ The interface feels cluttered with too many tabs and options. New users might find it confusing. GOG has a cleaner and more straightforward design, which makes browsing easier for beginners.
- 📉 Customer support can be slow. When I had an issue with a purchase, it took days to get a reply. Epic responds faster in my experience, so Steam could improve here.
