I've been using it for over a year now, mostly when helping friends move apartments. The app is free to download on Google Play and the App Store, and you don't need to register to browse prices, but you do need an account to reserve anything. It has over 10 million installs on Google Play alone. There are no forced in app purchases, but you can add extras like furniture pads or blankets for a small fee. Ads are not annoying here, they mostly show you their own rental deals and discounts. I like that the app is straightforward and gets the job done without too many steps.
When you open the app, you type in your pickup city and drop off location, then pick a truck size. The app shows you available trucks in real time, which is super helpful. I usually book a 10-foot truck for small moves. A tip I always follow is to book at least two days early, especially on weekends. The app also lets you add equipment like dollies or ramps, which saves time at the counter. You can even return the truck after hours by just snapping a photo and dropping the keys in a box. That feature has saved me more than once when I ran late. Everything feels designed for people who are not professional movers, just regular folks like me who need a quick solution.
I've tried other apps like Budget Truck Rental and Penske. U-Haul feels simpler because it has more pickup locations everywhere, even in small towns. Penske trucks are newer and smoother to drive, but they are harder to find on short notice. Budget sometimes has cheaper rates, but their app is not as smooth as U-Haul's. What keeps me coming back to U-Haul is the convenience of booking storage units along with the truck. It makes moving day less stressful.
