You do need to create a free account to use it, which only takes a minute. There are no forced in app purchases, though some third party devices might offer paid features. The app has over 50 million installs on Google Play alone, so it's pretty widely used. It launched a few years ago and is constantly updated with new device support and bug fixes. I like that one app handles so many different brands of smart devices. You don't need separate apps for each gadget, which saves storage space on my phone.

Using the app is straightforward once you pair your first device. I open the app, and the main screen shows all my devices as large icons.
