Change Hair And Eye Color is a photo editing app that makes trying new hair and eye colors simple and fast. I downloaded it from Google Play a few months ago when I wanted to see what I'd look like with different hair colors without the commitment of dye. The app is completely free to install and doesn't require any registration to start using it, which I really appreciated. It launched a few years back and is available on both Google Play and the App Store, with millions of downloads. While the core app is free, there are some in-app purchases for extra color packs or to remove ads. I do see occasional banner ads, but they're not too intrusive and you can pay to remove them if they bother you.
Using the app is straightforward. After you install it, you just pick a photo from your gallery or take a new one. The app then automatically detects your face, hair, and eyes. You use simple sliders to change the hair color—everything from natural blondes and brunettes to wild blues and pinks. For the eyes, you can pick a new color and adjust the intensity. My tip is to use a clear, front-facing photo with good lighting for the best results. Sometimes the auto-detection isn't perfect around the edges of your hair, so there's a manual brush tool to fine-tune the area. I use it just for fun, to share hypothetical makeovers with friends or decide if I should actually go blonde.
Compared to other similar apps like YouCam Makeup or FaceApp, Change Hair And Eye Color is much more focused. Those other apps have a ton of filters and beauty tools, which can be overwhelming. This app does one thing and does it pretty well. I chose it because it was a smaller download, didn't need an account, and the color changes looked more realistic to me than some of the overly filtered looks in bigger apps. For someone who just wants to play with hair and eye color without a complicated interface, this is the app I'd recommend from Google Play.
Features
- 🎨 The main function is instant hair color change with realistic blending and a huge palette of shades, which feels more natural than the blocky color overlays in some basic editors.
- 👁️ It offers precise eye color replacement, letting you match iris detail instead of just placing a colored circle, giving better results than similar apps like Perfect365.
- 🖌️ The manual touch-up brush for fixing the auto-selection is a standout tool for accuracy, something I find more user-friendly than the complex layers in Adobe Photoshop Express.
- 📁 It works offline after download and saves edits directly to your gallery without watermarking, which is more convenient than many apps that require uploads.
Pros
- 👍 The color application looks surprisingly realistic and blends well with your original photo, unlike some apps where the color looks obviously pasted on.
- 👍 It's incredibly easy and fast to use right after install—much simpler for beginners than feature-heavy apps like FaceApp.
- 👍 Being completely free to download with a solid set of base colors is a great advantage over apps that lock basic features behind a paywall immediately.
Cons
- 👎 The ad frequency can interrupt the editing flow, and the auto-face detection sometimes misses strands of hair.
- 👎 The selection of "premium" colors locked behind purchases is limited compared to the vast free libraries in competing apps.
