Hair Color & Hairstyle Try On is a beauty app that makes changing your look simple and fast without any real commitment. I downloaded it from google play around six months ago and have been playing with it ever since. The app lets you test different hair colors and hairstyles on your own photos using AR technology. It launched back in 2021 and is available on both google play and the App Store. It has over 10 million installs on google play alone which shows how popular it really is. The app is free to download and you can use most features without paying anything. You do need to create an account to save your looks but that takes just a minute. There are some in app purchases for premium hair styles and colors and you will see ads between tries but they are not too annoying.

Using this app is really straightforward. You just take a selfie or upload a photo from your gallery and the app automatically detects your face. Then you can scroll through hundreds of hair colors from natural black to crazy neon shades. I love testing colors I would never try in real life like pastel pink or silver gray. The hairstyle section has long hair short cuts curls and braids. A tip I figured out is to make sure your hair is visible in the photo and not covered by a hat or scarf because the app works much better that way. The tracking is smooth and the color blends nicely with your skin tone. You can also change the intensity of the color so it does not look fake. I usually spend about ten minutes trying different combinations before I screenshot my favorites. The app even has a feature for virtual makeup try on but I mostly stick to hair changes.

There are other apps like YouCam Makeup and Style My Hair that do similar things but I keep coming back to this one. The main reason is that the hair color Try On feature feels more natural here than in other apps. The colors look more realistic on different lighting conditions and the hair movement is smoother when I turn my head. It also offers more free hairstyles compared to Style My Hair which locks many looks behind a paywall. Another thing I like is that it works well on older phones without lagging. Some apps crash on my device but this one runs fine even with all the AR processing. It is not perfect but for a free app it gives me exactly what I need to experiment with my look before I go to the salon.

  • 📢 The ads are frequent and pop up between every color change. It interrupts the flow unlike YouCam Makeup which has fewer interruptions.
  • 🔒 Some popular hairstyles are locked behind a premium subscription. I wish more styles were free like in the Style My Hair app.
  • 👤 The app asks for too many permissions including access to your camera roll and contacts which feels unnecessary for a hair Try On app.
