Microsoft Edge is a web browser app designed to help you browse the internet faster and smarter. It's my go-to app for searching, shopping, reading news, and managing work tabs. Originally launched in 2015, it's now available for free on both Google Play and the App Store, with over a billion downloads on Android alone. You don't need to register to start using it, which is great for quick access. The core app is free to download and install, and while it shows some ads, they're usually not too intrusive. It also has optional in-app purchases for its premium Microsoft 365 subscription, but for everyday browsing, you don't need to pay anything.

Using Microsoft Edge feels very smooth. I start by typing a search or a website address into the address bar, which also works as a search bar. One of my favorite tips is using the vertical tabs feature on my tablet; it lets me see all my open tabs as a list on the side, which is much cleaner than the traditional top bar, especially when I have many tabs open for research. The Collections feature is another lifesaver—I can just click the plus icon in the toolbar, create a new collection for a project, and drag in links, images, or text from any webpage. It's perfect for planning trips or compiling work resources. The read-aloud function is also handy for long articles when I'm multitasking.

Compared to other browsers like Chrome or Samsung Internet, I keep coming back to Edge for a few personal reasons. It feels more integrated with my Windows laptop, allowing easy tab syncing, which others do but not as seamlessly. The built-in AI features, like the Copilot sidebar for quick summaries or asking questions about a page without leaving it, give it an edge (pun intended) for getting things done. While Chrome is super popular, I find Edge to be lighter on my phone's battery sometimes, and the tracking prevention feels robust. For someone who values productivity tools baked directly into the browser, Edge stands out without feeling overly complex.

Features

  • 🔍 Built-in AI Copilot: Get instant page summaries, ask questions, or draft content in a sidebar without switching tabs, making research much faster than manually reading through everything.
  • 📁 Vertical Tabs & Collections: Manage dozens of open tabs in a neat side list and organize web content into shareable collections, which feels more orderly than Chrome's horizontal tab chaos.
  • 🛡️ Strong Privacy Controls: Features like Tracking Prevention and InPrivate mode offer clearer, more straightforward settings compared to some other browsers, giving a greater sense of security.
  • ⚡ Efficiency Tools: PDF annotation, read-aloud, and quick math solutions in the address bar handle small tasks without needing extra apps, streamlining the whole browsing experience.

Pros

  • ✅ Deep Microsoft Integration: Syncs passwords, favorites, and history perfectly across Windows, Android, and iOS, which is smoother than trying to connect Chrome with Microsoft accounts.
  • ✅ AI-Powered Smarts: The Copilot and page summary features feel genuinely useful for learning and work, putting it ahead of more basic browsers like Firefox Focus.
  • ✅ Performance & Battery: Often feels snappier and less draining on my phone's battery during long sessions compared to my experience with Chrome.
  • ✅ Organization: Vertical tabs and Collections are game-changers for tab hoarders, offering better built-in organization tools than most competitors.

Cons

  • ⚠️ Can feel a bit pushy with Microsoft services and prompts compared to more neutral browsers like Brave.
  • ⚠️ The mobile interface, while clean, has a lot of features tucked away, which might overwhelm new users seeking simplicity.
