You can get the Gmail app on both Google Play and the Apple App Store. On Google Play alone, it has been downloaded over 10 billion times, which shows how many people trust it. The app is completely free to download and use. You do need a Google account to register and sign in, which is easy to set up if you don't have one. Once you're in, there are no annoying in-app purchases required for core email functions. You will see some ads in your inbox, but they are usually not too intrusive and are clearly marked as promotions. The app syncs seamlessly across your phone, tablet, and computer, so you can pick up where you left off anywhere.

Using Gmail is straightforward. When you open the app, all your emails are right there, sorted into tabs like Primary, Social, and Promotions to keep things tidy. To write a new email, you just tap the big compose button. A real user tip is to use the swipe gestures—you can customize them in settings to archive or delete emails with a quick swipe, which saves a ton of time.
