Learn to Draw Cartoon is a drawing tutorial app designed to help you learn how to draw cartoon characters step by step. I found it on Google Play a while back when I was looking for a simple way to get into drawing. The app launched a few years ago and is available for free on both Google Play and the App Store. It has over a million downloads on Google Play, which shows a lot of people are using it. You can download and install it for free without any upfront cost. You don't need to register an account to start using the tutorials, which I really like because it gets you drawing right away. The app does show some banner ads at the bottom of the screen, but they aren't too intrusive. There are also optional in-app purchases if you want to remove the ads or unlock some premium tutorial packs, but the free content is more than enough to get started.
Using the app is very straightforward. After you install it, you open it up and see a list of cartoon characters or objects to draw. You pick one, like a cute animal or a funny face, and the app shows you a series of simple steps. You start with basic shapes like circles and ovals, and then add lines and details step by step until the drawing is complete. I usually use my finger on my phone screen, but it works with a stylus too if you have one. A simple tip from my experience is to take your time with each step and don't worry if your lines aren't perfect. The goal is to learn the process. Another tip is to use the zoom feature on the steps if the details are small; it makes it much easier to follow along. I often practice the same tutorial a few times until I feel comfortable with it.
Compared to other learn-to-draw apps I've tried, like How to Draw - Easy Lessons, this one feels more focused and less cluttered. Some other apps in the art and design genre try to do too much or have complicated interfaces. Learn to Draw Cartoon keeps it simple, which is why I chose it. It doesn't overwhelm you with choices. It's just a solid, straightforward app for learning cartoon drawing. For someone new, that's really helpful. Other apps might have more advanced features or a wider variety of styles, but for pure, simple cartoon drawing tutorials that you can follow on your phone, this app from Creative APPS does the job very well. It's become my go-to when I have a few minutes to spare and want to practice.
Features
- 🎨 Provides clear, step-by-step tutorials for specific cartoon characters, breaking complex drawings into simple shapes and lines anyone can follow.
- 🎨 Offers a wide library of free tutorials covering animals, people, and objects, so there's always something new to learn without paying.
- 🎨 Features a clean, user-friendly interface that makes navigation easy, unlike some similar apps that feel crowded or confusing.
- 🎨 Includes a zoom function for tutorial steps, a simple but crucial tool for seeing details that other basic drawing apps sometimes lack.
Pros
- 👍 The step-by-step breakdown is exceptionally clear and beginner-friendly, more so than many other tutorial apps that skip intermediate steps.
- 👍 It requires no sign-up, offering instant access to lessons, which is faster and simpler than apps that force account creation.
- 👍 The sheer volume of free content is a major strength compared to similar apps that lock most tutorials behind a paywall immediately.
- 👍 The app is lightweight and installs quickly, perfect for casual practice without consuming much phone storage.
Cons
- 📌 The ads, while not overwhelming, can be distracting during a lesson; some competing apps offer a cleaner ad-free experience for a small fee.
- 📌 The drawing is done directly on the screen without layers or advanced tools, which is fine for learning but limits practice compared to full-featured art apps.
