Genshin Impact is an open-world action RPG developed by miHoYo (now COGNOSPHERE PTE. LTD.). It's a massive, free-to-play adventure game available on mobile (iOS and Android via the App Store and Google Play), PC, and PlayStation consoles. While completely free to download and explore, it uses a "gacha" system for obtaining new characters and weapons, where you spend a premium currency called Primogems. You can earn Primogems slowly through gameplay or buy them directly. There are no forced ads, but there are time-limited events and a paid monthly pass that offers extra resources.
You play as the Traveler, exploring the vast, beautiful nation of Teyvat to find your lost sibling. The core gameplay is real-time combat where you control a team of four characters, switching between them to combine different elemental powers like Pyro (fire) and Hydro (water) for big damage. The best part is the sheer freedom. You can climb any mountain, glide from peaks, solve puzzles in ancient ruins, and fight world bosses just because they're there. My favorite activity is simply wandering into a new area, getting distracted by a shiny collectible or a mysterious quest marker, and losing hours to discovery. The story quests for major characters are also highlights, feeling like high-quality anime episodes.
Compared to similar open-world games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Genshin Impact stands out with its constant updates, introducing new regions and stories every few months. Unlike many mobile RPGs that feel like a chore, Genshin is a true adventure you can get lost in. I recommend it to players who love exploration and collecting characters, even with the gacha system. If you enjoyed the exploration of Breath of the Wild but want a live-service game with a deep combat system and an ongoing story, this is your game.
Features
- Elemental Combat System ⚡️: Switch between four characters to trigger elemental reactions like Vaporize or Electro-Charged for strategic, flashy fights.
- Massive Open World 🗺️: A stunning, ever-growing map you can explore freely by climbing, gliding, and swimming with no stamina limits for running.
- Diverse Character Roster 👥: Collect and build a team from dozens of unique characters, each with their own story, abilities, and playstyle.
- Regular Free Content 📅: Major updates every six weeks add new areas, story chapters, events, and features, unlike static games like Breath of the Wild.
- Cross-Platform Play & Save 🔄: Seamlessly play the same account on your phone, PC, or PlayStation, picking up right where you left off.
Pros
- Stunning Visuals & Music 🎨: The world is incredibly beautiful with an unforgettable orchestral soundtrack that rivals any AAA game.
- True Free-to-Play ✅: The entire core game, including all regions and main story, is completely free. No paywall blocks exploration.
- Constant New Adventures 🆕: Regular updates mean there's always a new area to explore or event to play, keeping the game fresh for years.
Cons
- Gacha System Reliance 🎰: Getting specific characters or weapons relies on luck or spending, which can be frustrating compared to games where you earn heroes directly.
- Daily Grind Pressure 📊: Endgame involves daily tasks and resin (stamina) limits, which can feel like a chore to keep up with character progression.
- Large File Size 📱: The game requires significant and growing storage space on mobile devices, which can be a problem for some players.
