You do need to register with your phone number to create an account, which makes it easy to find people you already know. While the main features are free, Zalo does have some in-app purchases, like buying stickers or coins for games. You might also see some ads within the app, but they are generally not too intrusive and don't get in the way of chatting.
Using Zalo is pretty straightforward. After you download and install the app, you sign up with your number, and it automatically finds contacts from your phonebook who are also on Zalo. The main screen is your chat list. You can send text messages, make voice and video calls, and share photos, videos, and files. Zalo has tons of fun, expressive stickers, many themed around Vietnamese culture, which make conversations more lively. The call quality is usually very clear, even on slower connections.
