Custom Kicks is a lifestyle app in the shopping category that makes designing your own sneakers simple and fast. I found this app on Google Play around six months ago, and it has been a solid tool for anyone who likes unique footwear. The app is free to download, and you can start using it right away without signing up. There are some in app purchases for extra design elements, and there are ads but they don't pop up too often. The app has over a million installs on Google Play, which shows it has a good user base. It also works on iOS, so you can use it on both Android and Apple devices. The main idea is simple pick a shoe model, pick colors, pick materials, and then order the finished product. It takes a lot of guesswork out of custom sneaker design.

When I use the app, I start by picking a base shoe from a few popular styles like low tops or high tops. Then I can change the color of each part like the toe, the heel, the tongue, and even the laces. A tip I picked up is to use the preview tool a lot because some colors look different on screen than on real materials. The app lets you add text and small logos too, which is nice for personal gifts. You can save your designs and come back later, and the app saves your recent work in a gallery. I also found that using neutral base colors with one bright accent looks cleaner. The app is pretty responsive and does not lag even with complex designs. It is a good way to kill time and see what your dream sneaker would look like.

There are a few other apps in this space like Nike By You and some third party custom shoe apps. Custom Kicks stands out because it does not care about brand limits like Nike does. You are not stuck with just one brand's style or color choices. The app lets you use a wider range of materials and colors than most official brand apps. It also feels less corporate and more like a creative tool made for real sneaker fans. The only downside compared to Nike By You is that the shipping time is a bit longer because it is a smaller company. But for the price and the freedom to really design what you want, I choose Custom Kicks every time. It is also easier to navigate than other custom shoe apps I tried from Google Play. The simple layout and clean menus make it a relaxing experience, not a confusing one.

Features

  • 🎨 The main function is a 3D shoe designer where you change colors, materials, and patterns on different parts of the sneaker. Nike By You has a similar feature but it limits you to preset color palettes and materials. Custom Kicks gives you a full color wheel and more material options like suede, leather, and mesh. It feels more open.
  • 🖊️ You can add custom text and small images to the shoe. This is rare in most custom shoe apps. Nike By You only lets you add text on limited spots and with limited fonts. Custom Kicks gives you font choices and placement control. I used it to add a nickname on the heel, and it came out looking clean.
  • 🛒 The ordering process is built right into the app with size selection and delivery tracking. Some similar apps make you go to a separate website to order. Custom Kicks keeps everything in one place. The shipping info is clear and the tracking updates are reliable, which is something I appreciate over other apps I have tried from Google Play.

Pros

  • 🟢 The design interface is very easy to use, even for someone who never designed shoes before. Compared to apps like ShoeCreator which have cluttered menus, Custom Kicks is more straightforward and less intimidating.
  • 🟢 Material and color variety is way better than most similar apps. Apps like Nike By You or Adidas miadidas only give you their own materials, but Custom Kicks has unique textures and finishes that make your shoe stand out more.
  • 🟢 Price is fair for a custom product. Other apps charge a premium just for being a brand name, but Custom Kicks keeps the cost reasonable, especially for the amount of design control you get.

Cons

  • 🔴 Shipping takes a bit long compared to big brand apps. Nike By You delivers in about two weeks, but Custom Kicks can take up to four weeks sometimes.
  • 🔴 There are some ads that pop up while you are designing, and they can break your focus. Other apps like ShoeCreator have fewer ads, so this could be better.
  • 🔴 The app does not have a social sharing feature built in, so you have to screenshot your design to show friends. Some similar apps let you share directly to social media.
